Medicare will determine if the patient is receiving adequate care where they are. If the answer is no, then Medicare will pay to transfer the patient to a facility that will provide adequate care but in most cases that facility is in the same town. We would be happy to submit your claim to Medicare for you however.

We can take patients who require oxygen on commercial flights with a nurse escort but there are certain limitations. Most airlines can provide up to 4 liters per minute provided our doctor signs a prescription and request and the patient is traveling with a medical escort. Since a patient needs more oxygen in the air than on the ground, a patient should be using no more than 2.5 liters per minute on the ground to qualify. Our nurse will monitor the patient’s oxygen level on the ground and in the air to ensure that the patient is receiving adequate o2. Another limitation is that many flights are not non-stop and the patient will require o2 at the connection airport as well as on the trips to and from the airports. Our flight team can arrange all of this for the patient as well as monitor the trip and the oxygen providers to ensure that oxygen is available from start to finish.

One of our most cost effective means of patient transport is Amtrak Medical Escort. Prices are well below air medical neonatal and long distance ground transport. Patients are accompanied by a critical care nurse or paramedic in a sleeper car on a passenger train. Our nurses provide bedside-to-bedside assistance including supplying monitoring equipment, hygienic assistance and all necessary aid, such as administering medication.

All air ambulances are very limited in space because of all the medical equipment on board. To ensure the safety of the patient, we try to limit the luggage on each flight to one carry-on per person and when I say carry-on I mean something that would be able to fit on a commercial flight on the overhead compartment. Unlike JCAHO, which is an independent accrediting organization for hospitals, no truly independent organization for accrediting fixed wing aircraft yet exists. CAMTS certification is basically a group of escort quote air ambulance companies that have tried to set standards but they are not widely accepted. Included in the service is the grounds and it requires a lot of coordination to ensure that it is the right type of transportation for the client, it arrives on time, is staffed properly. We include its cost in the price, we set it up on both sides, and we include a coordinator to manage it on the day of your trip.

There is no charge for additional passengers. In many cases, we can take two passengers. We fly seven days a week and there aren’t additional charge for flying the weekends as well. Many families take advantage of this and patients are comforted by their presence. However, I can assure you that our nurses are well trained to be companions to your patient from the beginning to the end and if you are not able to be on that plane ticket, we will take excellent care of them.
